Karen Finerman is no stranger to doing the impossible. In the early 90s, she co-founded a wildly successful hedge fund—and continues to lead it today as CEO…while also raising four kids.

Still, she managed to find the time to answer a few of our questions. Read on for some quick money advice and career inspiration.

Q: Please share how your professional career began and how you ended up where you are today?

A: I decided at 15 that I wanted to go to Wall Street because I wanted to make money to be financially independent. So I applied to the Wharton School and headed straight to Wall Street after graduation. In 1992, my partner Jeffrey Schwarz and I started our fund when hedge funds were in their infancy.

Q: Who is a leader that you have great respect for and why?

A: Sheryl Sandberg, because she is encouraging women to be proactive.

Q: What would you say is the largest misconception people have about managing their finances and how does that derail us from our goals?

A: There is never a time when your schedule opens up for a handful of days that can be blocked off to learn about your finances – make the time.

Q: What’s the best piece of financial advice you’ve ever received?

A: Stop spending money. There is a tremendous sense of power in building a nest egg.
